Dear Young, Black woman….You CAN!

Hey girl!

Yes, YOU!

Dear You young, black woman. . . you CAN.

You. CAN. Do. It!

It doesn’t matter how dark you are, if you don’t comb your hair (that’s hit and miss for me), if you’re “aggressive” or “opinionated”, “not fit for corporate work” and “flighty”, or a single mother. . .

I KNOW you can!

HOW do I know? Well, allow me to introduce myself…

I am a 33 year old.

I am a 33 year old Creative Business + People Development Consultant. i.e. I creatively help people craft the lives or businesses of their dreams, or at least create the road maps and bridges to get them there. I also help clients to tell others about the awesomeness of their business, using interactive marketing tactics.

I am a 33 year old Creative Business + People Development Consultant who is a single mother.

I am a 33 year old Creative Business + People Development Consultant who is the single mother of a 9 year old little girl with behavioral issues.

Right, so what that looks like in MY life, is that I have a child who doesn’t sit still. Further to that, she climbs (been doing it BEFORE she could even walk), runs and jumps. She is also highly intelligent, which translates into her asking questions ALL. THE. TIME. She will also basically go anywhere, speak to anyone, and touch anything, partly because she’s impulsive, partly because she has little fear, and partly because she’s an extremely inquisitive social creature. To top it all off, if something throws her off . . . MELTDOWN. Sometimes lasting upwards of an hour. Fun…fun all round.

I am a 33 year old Creative Business + People Development Consultant and I home school.  Finding a school that works for us both proved to be beyond the limits of my relatively small island country of Trinidad and Tobago, i.e. the school we both LOVE (read: ‘alternative’ education – gardening, horse riding, yoga, no real focus on tests, and run by caring, competent teachers), is located on the smaller isle of our twin island state, where I can’t find enough clients to build a viable life. And yes, I COULD use the internet, but I’m a touchy, feely kinda girl.

I am a 33 year old Creative Business + People Development Consultant and I have no baby sitter. So….my little one comes to work with mommy. Yep, all the time. Big corporate offices, a t.v. station, an optician’s office, a radio station, coffee shop meetings, in the studio, a global ad agency, run around on the day of an event, backstage AT the event….my little one comes to work with mommy.

And this is not new. When I was finishing up my Associate Degree, I strapped her into the baby carrier and took her to class with me for the better part of my final semester. Thank God she was a generally quiet baby.

Dear You young, black woman, I am telling you all of this to say that You CAN.

If I can do it in my ‘interesting’ situation, then WHATEVER your situation, You CAN.

You MAY have to restructure your life. You MAY have to quit trying to fit in and be like everyone else and quit trying to follow the template, and you MAY have to unleash your Awesomeness.

Because you see, when you’re AWESOME, when you’re soooo good at what you do that random people call your phone saying that they were referred by past clients and associates, then the world plays by YOUR rules; you get to call the shots.

So, dear You young, black woman. . . You CAN.

Now, will you?
