I am KArima B Mckenzie-Thomas and I’m a self harmer.
My thoughts, decisions, actions, and sometimes words, are devices I sometimes use against myself to sabotage my present and my future, because of my past.
EVERY day therefore, I must make the choice to LOVE and preserve ME, regardless of the situation / temptation / threat.
I’m vastly improved; I no longer use substances, dangerous situations/adrenaline rushes and people who are bad for me, to compromise and harm myself.
My Self compromising happens in much smaller, less obvious to others, but still ‘bad for me in the long run’ doses.
Life is a daily reworking of who I am, what I believe, what I feel I’m worthy of, and who I want to be in the days, months and years to come.
There, now you know.
Now you can hopefully appreciate even more, the things I share and the beliefs I have (as counter intuitive as they may be).
Counter intuitive has saved me, because a Caribbean upbringing generally, is one of self hate and total dysfunction.
No, don’t just get on your high horse offended, REALLY think about it: colourism; repressive religious fundamentalism; abuse called love; patriarchal mores in a matriarchal reality; bastardisation of ANYTHING creative, traditional or cultural; a complete lack of financial know how; a stifling, hierarchy and seniority based society….etc etc.
So yep, EVERY day I must listen to my Soul, to the God within me, and. choose. me. And, some days I fail, but EVERY day I learn and grow.
